Program Philosophy and Animal Training-
It is important to understand how our mood and level of calmness affects the outcome of working with animals.
Animals are great teachers of this principle in that they respond directly to our state of mind. If we act with calmness and respect toward them, in almost all cases, that is what we will get back from them. It is up to us (as good animal trainers and caretakers) to learn their language. Therefore it is imperative for us to “see” the world through “their” eyes of perception, so we can directly, calmly and respectfully communicate with them. That is all that animal training is. Knowing the desired result we want to get from the animal and also knowing the method to communicate this to them in their own language and body language. We want the animal’s education to be fun, enjoyable and healthy for both them and for ourselves. In this method of training a slow and trusting relationship is nurtured and developed. The outcome is nothing short of beauty itself. When we can get close to animals in an air of total trust, that’s when the real connection takes place, a fusion of different perceptions. At this point they may become the teachers and help us expand our perceptions by taking us into their world for a while… the sled dogs teach us to “see” like their ancestors the wolves see… Horses teach us to feel the freedom of movement with all four hoofs on the ground… Hummingbirds will show us the power in their tiny bodies, and Llamas might expose to us their wisdom and ability for calm perceptions…

“The Process” : To be part of and understand the ongoing “process” of animal training, gardening, running sled dogs, and nature observations. At the core of all of these are a basic respect and honoring of the natural world around us. Being integrated into this process is much more complete than just taking part in one of its isolated fragments such as going for a horse ride.
We emphasize these deep explorations and experiences in everything we offer here at the Telemark Inn. The process of gardening, the practice of caring for and developing a well trained healthy sled dog team, the manner of horse care, training and conditioning. The process of developing a vibrant hummingbird population here at the lodge. Engaging in the deep workings that make Telemark a place of harmony for all living creatures is what sets the stage for success elsewhere.
